Already almost 500 deaths from coronavirus
Almost 500 people have now died from the corona virus, which has been rampant for weeks. After the Philippines, Hong Kong reported the second death outside of mainland China. The Chinese health authorities announced on Wednesday that the number of deaths in the People’s Republic had risen by 65 to 490.
Most of the victims are in Hubei Province and its sealed-off capital, Wuhan. The number of infections grew by almost 3,900 to more than 24,300 by late Tuesday evening. The focus is increasingly on cruise ships that are denied entry into ports and that are quarantined. The uncertainty also affects the economy.
China is still hardest hit by the epidemic; the first cases of infection were reported in Wuhan more than a month ago. But almost 230 cases of infection have also become known in 27 other countries and regions outside of mainland China, 12 in Germany and 18 in Hong Kong. A 39-year-old man who had previously visited Wuhan died there on Tuesday. Last week, a man in the Philippines succumbed to his coronavirus-related illness. He had also been to Wuhan before.
